Oh so close!

Adam and I are happy to announce that we are at the 37th week mark! Baby Baird is officially considered full term! Yay!! I saw the Doctor yesterday and had another biophysical. Unfortunately, the amniotic fluid was low again. I spoke with my doctor and she said that if it continues to drop they will pull me in sooner to be induced. We're not sure why it's fluctuating so much but they're keeping a close eye out for me. I am supposed to count kicks twice a day. This just means that once in the morning and once in the evening I'm supposed to count 10 movement/kicks within one hour. If it is anything less than 6 I need to contact my doctor. So far baby Baird has been cooperating and we can keep him in there till September 15th. As much as Adam and I are excited to meet him, we don't want him out sooner than necessary. We have officially started the countdown! 2 weeks and counting! Everyone keep your fingers crossed that we make it to the 15th!

3 Weeks and Counting!

Happy to announce that we are only 3 weeks away from today!! Time has flown by so fast but Adam and I are getting more excited by the minute! We had another biophysical yesterday and thankfully we passed :) She said everything looked great (including the fluid) so both Adam and I are very happy!

According to our books, all of the baby's senses are well-developed. He has a sense of taste and his body is sensitive to hot and cold pressure. After he's born, he'll be able to see our faces when it's 6 inches away from his.

Last night Adam and I graduated child birth class! It was a bitter-sweet feeling. We are excited cause it means we are that much closer but we loved our teacher and our class.

I'm feeling great, just super tired. My energy level has definitely plummeted in the last few weeks. I'm trying to rest as much as I can (which for those of you who know me is a challenge but I'm trying).

Adam and I are so blessed and fortunate to have such great family and friends in our life. We just want to thank everyone again for their love and support!

And there's more!

I received a phone call yesterday from one of my nurse's who informed me that Dr. Maturo had time to take a closer look at my sonogram from last week and noticed that Baby Baird's amniotic fluid was lower than normal. She explained to me that I was still in what they would call the "safe zone," but it's not where they would like it. So.... instead of having two NST's twice a week, I am going in once a week to a sonographer to have a biophysical profile done on the baby. What is this you may ask??? Basically they are looking at his movements (they want him to kick, move his hands, swish around, that sort of thing), they are looking for him to take practice breaths and they're keeping an eye on the level of amniotic fluid.

I went in for my first one today and she said that everything looked good. He was being quite stubborn on taking practice breaths, but she said that typically it takes most babies a while to do them. As long as he takes a certain amount of practice breaths within a certain time frame we're OK!

On a happier note! At childbirth class on Monday, Adam got to experience (for 5 minutes) what it feels like to be pregnant! He got to wear a empathy belly! Yay!! Our instructor made him do all sorts of fun stuff! She kept throwing her markers on the floor for him to pick up (God I love this woman). So here are some pictures that I took! I hope everyone enjoys!! (I sure did!)

Here's Adam putting on the empathy belly :) (weighed 50lbs!)

Gettin the feel for it!

Oops Adam dropped his "keys"

Having trouble tying those shoes???

And last but not least :) This one is my favorite!

29 Days and Counting!

There are only twenty-nine days left(or less) until the world is graced with the presence of baby Baird! Meg's pregnancy has been a wonderful adventure thus far and it is exciting to think that we are going to begin Part II in the parenthood saga very soon. We had another NST today and a meeting with Meg's doctor, Sharon Maturo. She was very happy to see us and is excited to see our little man in the flesh. She informed us that everything is going great with Megan and baby, Megan has managed to slow baby's growth considerably since we've been maintaining Meg's blood sugars very well. The sonogram technician estimated that he is around 5lbs 9oz and is now only in the 55th percentile weight wise, he was in the 75th percentile a few weeks ago. So now baby should only end up being anywhere between 7-9 pounds. We had another sono performed and baby is looking great! You can see his little foot in one of the pictured and the other one (it is hard to tell) you can see hair! The technician said we have a furry little man coming our way which put a big smile on both of our faces. It is hard to believe that in four weeks we'll be parents! It seems like yesterday we found out that Meg was pregnant and now we can both relate to the feeling older family members have when they say "You've grown up so fast!" Megan and I feel very blessed with the opportunity to bring another life into this world and are very lucky and grateful for all of our family, friends, and support group in general!

At this point in the pregnancy baby Baird is quite the extraordinary little man! He can sense changed in temperature from hot to cold and can even gauge the sensation of pressure changes!

Week 33 Update!

Hello everybody! Megan's pregnancy is going very well. Baby Baird is a bit on the big size he was 4lbs 3oz about four weeks ago and if he is gaining a half a a pound a week he is supposed to be, he's a little over six pounds now. The doctors are not too concerned about his size he is just a big baby right now but his growth could slow or change over the next few weeks and he could turn out to be an average sized baby. Dr. Maturo said his weight was not an issue but his physical size is what they're keeping a close eye on. While he is in the 80th percentile weight wise the circumference of his head and belly are extremely large and Dr. Maturo assured us this was no reason to be alarmed aside from the higher possibility of a c-section.

Megan has began her 'nesting' mode which is currently in overdrive... She will not stop trying to clean, wipe, sanitize and vacuum any and every surface inside our apartment. If you know Megan well, this is not out of the ordinary - but now her cleaning and upkeep routine is in complete overdrive! So everything is on track and all of Meg's weekly tests and doctors visits are going great. Six weeks from today is when her induction date is schedule - as long as our little man isn't too anxious to make an early exit. Megan has another sonogram next week and we will be sure to post pictures and notify everyone of baby Baird's status!

We Have A Date!!!

Megan and I are pleased to announce that the arrival of our baby boy will be on September 15th!!! Megan had a doctor's appointment on Thursday this past week to discuss her blood sugar levels and to do another routine NST(Non-Stress Test). Megan asked Dr. Maturo what the likelihood of her being induced was and Sharon replied with "How does the 15th sound???". Sadly I was unable to attend this meeting but would have loved to been able to witness Meg's ear to ear grin! So as definite as a baby's arrival can be we are planning our son's arrival to be Sept. 15th as long as he can wait until then! It is somewhat relieving to both Megan and myself to at least have a date set, which very well could change. We are not to fond of surprises and knowing when we have to be at the hospital and what steps lie ahead and when makes us feel a great deal more comfortable. We will arrive at Shawnee Mission Medical Center the night before at 8:00 PM to prepare for the next days adventure where the doctors will then inject Megan with Pitocin to jump start the birthing process.

The other good news is that we have finally managed to get Meg's blood sugar under control! It took us a few days of trial and error to get it all figured out, but we did it! We just had to fine tune our diet plan and wait for the Glyburide to take a consistent effect and now we do not have to worry about Megan being put on insulin shots.

Baby Baird has some stiff competition when it comes to known people born on the 15th of September. Maybe one day he will be added to the list! :)

Famous people born on Sept 15th:
Prince Harry - Royalty
Tommy Lee Jones - Actor
Pete 'Cut and Run' Carrol - Former USC head coach now Seattle Seahawks head coach
Josh Charles - Actor
Agatha Christe - Novelist
Karl T. Compton - Physicist
Norm Crosby - Stand up comedian
Dan Marino - Hall of Fame Quarterback
Olive Stone - Director
William Howard Taft - 27th President

Week 31 Update!

Prego Mego at 31 WEEKS!!! Oh boy is she one beautiful gal!!! She just looks so vibrant and healthy and amazing!!! She is going to be a wonderful parent and in nine weeks or less!!!

Hey everyone! Meg and I have been extremely busy lately and do apologize for missing a few weeks. The past few weeks have thrown quite a bit at us, both good and bad. So first we'll start off with the bad...

Megan has gestational diabetes. ;( This was pretty shocking to us both and disappointing and frightening all at the same time. We had heard about gestational diabetes quite frequently and knew that it was fairly common now days, it was more or less just an emotional shock for us both. Everything has (and is) going wonderfully and then we found this out - it just scared us both mainly because we were unsure of what the effects on baby Baird and Megan could be. After doing a hefty amount of research we came to the conclusion that it is a very manageable condition and common as well. So after a meeting with our dietitian/nurse practitioner, Glenna, we are now basically vegetarians! Not completely but for the most part Meg's diet, which I follow religiously, consists of vegetables, vegetables, and water. No it's not really that bad, it essentially is a diet system in which the dieter must balance their carbs and protein according to a fairly strict guideline. There is no room for miscounting one carb, as we have found out can dramatically raise ones blood glucose level. So a strict carb diet, a no sugar diet, and a watch the fat as well diet... So Megan can't really indulge as a pregnant woman might want to do every so often (daily). As far as the glucose monitoring goes Megan must take her BS (blood sugar) four times a day, once immediately when she wakes up, and then two hours after every meal she eats. Typically in the morning it should be between 60-90 mg/dL (milligrams glucose per deciLiter blood) and during the day it should rise no greater than 120 mg/dL. This has proved to be fairly hard to achieve as it seems many foods whether carb or protein tend to raise her blood sugar an arbitrary amount. That being said, after about three days on our version of the "South Beach Diet" we could not manage to tame Megan's glucose levels to the liking of her physicians and she was put on a medication called Glyburide. From what we've read Glyburide is a drug that stimulates the pancreas into synthesizing more insulin and also allows the body to use that insulin more efficiently. It is a drug common among people who have type two diabetes. If we still cannot manage to get Meg's BS under control, she will have to start using an insulin shot - Obviously we are trying hard to get the BS under control because I couldn't bear watching Meg tear up after a shot(she, like many, absolutely hates needles). So along with the gestational diabetes comes the new diet (which in actuality will be good for both of us), the medicines, and the new routine of blood sugar monitoring.

On top of that Megan is having to go to the doctor's office twice a week now for NSTs(Non Stress Tests) and we will be getting sonograms once every few weeks as well to monitor baby Baird and make sure he is safe and sound. The NSTs sounds scary - but they're rather relaxing(for me at least). Megan has to sit in a comfy La-Z-Boy and then the nurse straps two harnesses around her belly with two sensors attached to them that monitor the baby's heart rate and movement. I get a kick out of this process because the machine she's hooked up to prints a readout that looks ironically similar to a polygraph! It's like a baby Law & Order scene! For the most part, we are managing her BS levels well, but they are still a little bit high. The major concerns to baby Baird is a condition known as Macrosomia - this is a baby that has taken on and absorbed too much sugar, along with the excess sugar excess insulin is produced which turns the sugar into fat making for a large baby that may require a c-section. Aside from macrosomia, the effects on a baby with a mother that has a known and treated case of gestational diabetes are of no great concern or worry.

Fun facts of the week:
refer to picture of baby Baird for fun facts!

Here is the latest and greatest picture of baby Baird to date!!! He is sooooo big now that you can barely see him on the screen! He is in the 85% percentile for children his age, meaning he is larger than 85% of babies at his developmental stage. The doc estimated that he weighs about 4 lbs 3 oz already - so there is a good chance that even with the maintenance of Megan's BS levels that she may have to be induced a week or so early. According to our books he is almost a pound larger than the typical baby. We were lucky enough to see our child taking practice breaths!!! It was the most amazing moment in our lives to see our little man preparing for the real world by using his little tummy muscles to practice taking breaths while still in the womb!
