Jackson's Birth Story

I know it's been quite a while since our last update but since Jackson's arrival things have been pretty crazy around here! But while I have a free hand today I wanted to share with everyone Jackson's birth story.

Wednesday morning I woke up around 3A.M having contractions, which was typical, only this time they were a lot stronger and didn't go away like they usually did. I was in and out of bed for about an hour before I decided to wake Adam up and start timing my contractions which were already five minutes apart. After about forty five minutes, Adam suggested that I hop in the shower while him and my sister started calling our families to let them know I was going into labor. Before I knew it, the bags were loaded in the car and we were on our way to the hospital! Now, anyone who has had to ride in a car while having contractions knows that there is no way you could possibly explain that kind of pain. I can honestly say that the car ride to the hospital was the longest car ride of my entire life!

In an odd way, I feel blessed that I went into labor naturally. As some of you may know, Adam and I found out about a week before that I was unable to have a vaginal birth due to my gestational diabetes and the baby's size. I was upset by this because I wanted to experience labor and the whole child birth experience. I feel blessed that I was able to experience labor as well as having a cesarean to deliver Jackson safely into the world. It is a life changing experience that I will never forget.

We finally arrived at the hospital about 5:30A.M. where I immediately was admitted and had about five nurses prepping me and getting me settled in. At that point my contractions were still about five minutes apart but felt a lot stronger. Thankfully my little man has perfect timing because I was already scheduled for a cesarean at 10:30 that morning. They gave me something for the pain and to try to slow down my contractions because I had two women in front of me for surgery. Unfortunately, the medicine that they gave me for the pain only lasted for about an hour before my contractions began to pick back up again. By about 8:30 my contractions were about a minute and a half to two minutes apart. Looking back I am so thankful that Adam was right by my side because he was the best support team I have ever had. He talked me through every contraction telling me when one would start and end and help me focus on my breathing which helped significantly! I could not have been more blessed to have him by my side!

A little after 9, my doctor finally came into my room and told me that everything was looking great and that baby was strong and healthy. Then she spoke those magical little words that I had been waiting for all morning...she asked if I wanted my epidural and of course I said yes! The anesthesiologist came into the room about 9:45 and as excited as I was to get the epidural, I was scared to death. The thought of someone putting a needle so close to my spine was a little intimidating. But it was quick and somewhat painless and thankfully he was cracking some jokes that made me relax more during the procedure. Within five minutes I began to feel the effects and man oh man, it was the greatest I have felt in 9 months! Adam said it looked like I had just taken about seven tequila shots in a row which I can honestly say is how I felt.

The next hour went relatively quick. The next thing I knew I was being wheeled into the delivery room and getting prepped for surgery. This is when I started to get a little scared and unfortunately Adam wasn't allowed in the room while they were getting me sterilized which is when anxiety began to sink in. I started getting upset on the exam table which is when the anesthesiologist asked if I was alright and I replied that I was used to surgery but the fact that I was awake kind of freaked me out. I was little apprehensive about feeling the actual surgery. The doctor then looked at me and said that she had already started which brought great relief!

Adam was in the room shortly after and before we knew it Jackson James Baird was born at 11:10A.M. weighed 7lbs 13.8 ounces and was 18 inches long! I can honestly say that this was the greatest moment in my entire life. It was a few minutes before I got to see him but the second I heard him cry, both Adam and I lost it completely. The nurses cleaned him up and then laid him on my chest.

I never knew what people meant by instant love until I had Jackson. He truly is the greatest thing that has ever happened to Adam and I. I had my concerns about being a new mom and having my motherly instincts kick in but after they laid him on my chest, it all just came together.

Adam, Jackson and I are so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family in our lives. Thank you everyone for being such a great support team for me and my new family. I know Adam and I couldn't have done this alone. This last week and a half has gone by so fast and it is an amazing feeling to see how much Jackson has grown in such a short time. Here are a few photos of our little man! I hope everyone enjoys! I'll continue to upload photos and keep everyone posted on Jackson!

Closer and Closer to B-Day!!!

We are getting closer and closer to the birthday of the next generation of the Baird and Heyer families! This has been one amazing (and very quick) journey for both Megan and I. It has been a very special past few months for the both of us. It makes us both very happy to know how many great people our son will have in his life and how many role models he will have growing up as a child. With all of our family and friends support this trip through Megan's pregnancy has been something we will never forget and we would like to thank all of you!!!

As you all know we are drawing near to the birthday of baby Baird. He will be here no later than the fifteenth which is this coming Wednesday! Megan had a doctors appointment on Thursday this week and we received some news that sort of bummed us out. The doctor will be performing a Cesarean section for the delivery. The main reason for this is that the little guy has broad shoulders and his head is big as well. They estimate he is around 8lbs 9oz which is very average for babies born nowadays. He has been a trooper, along with his mother, he has been kicking Megan nonstop now for the past few weeks making us believe he has put in his two weeks notice and is ready for his new job outside of the womb! We cannot wait to have the little guy around and are prepared to feed, change diapers, not sleep, and do what ever it takes to ensure the safety and health of our son. The only reason we are kind of disappointed about the C-Section is the fact that it has not been mentioned once by our OB and we believed that Megan was on track for a vaginal birth. Most babies born in todays world (in the US at least) are through a C-Section and it is obviously a very safe and sound procedure, we have been preparing for labor and all of the other things a normal birth brings and it's just somewhat disappointing we may not get to carry out any of the things we have prepared ourselves for. The main thing as with any pregnant woman is the health and safety of both her and the baby. We trust our doctors' medical opinion and she had a hard time telling Megan that she thought she should perform a C-Section because she new we wanted a vaginal birth if possible. There is still a possibility that Megan could go into labor before the Wed 10:30 surgery. Right now she is 50% effaced and about 2 centimeters dilated. The sonogram technician said that baby Baird's head was pretty far down so Megan's body is preparing for birth as well as baby Baird! If she does go into labor Dr. Maturo said that she would let the labor go and progress unless it stalls or there are any other signs that it will not progress normally. So C-Section or vaginal delivery, we just would like a healthy baby and a healthy Meggy!

On another important note we have decided on a name for our little man! Drum roll please.... And the winner of the baby name lottery is...... Jackson James Baird!!! We had a terribly difficult time choosing a name for our son! We had a never ending list of girls names and when we found out we were having a boy we were stumped. We had a few baby name books and such and we went through each multiple times and nothing caught our eye, so we had to go to Borders and purchased another book that had a more comprehensive list of names. So after we narrowed it down to a few Jackson just seemed to make us smile and it was something we could picture ourselves calling our son. James is the name of my father and we decided to stick with it for a middle name - early on we decided that if our child was a boy that "Adam" was not a very good middle name. I encourage you to try to find a name that goes with with it, as we had much trouble finding any names that it would disrupt the flow of!
